SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER je mezinárodní festival divadelních škol s více než třicetiletou tradicí. Jedinečnost festivalu spočívá v tom, že hlavní organizátory tvoří studenti Divadelní fakulty Janáčkovy akademie múzických umění.

SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER

The workshop "Physical Training through Ganggangsullae", led by Subin Baek and Sangyeob Lee (South Korea), focused on a long tradition related to the Korean holiday Chuseok. The basic form was singing in a circle while holding hands, with a combination of games. Choreography based on Ganggangsullae was also used in the production of The Nape. In the sound workshop, Kamila Holíková (CZ) presented "Sonic Meditation by Pauline Oliveros", a tool for connection with compassion, imagination, and memories. The workshop "Singing and Rhythm", facilitated by Pavel Borský (CZ), was dedicated to the human body and breath, its rhythm, movement and perception of music. The last workshop, entitled "Choreographing Space - Creating Drift" and organized in cooperation with the <a target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="Hyperlink SCXW155295272 BCX2" href="https://www.visegradfund.org/">International Visegrad Fund (IVF)</a> and facilitated by David Somló (Hungary), focused on exploring spatial composition and collective movement in public spaces using simple yet precise choreographic structures. The three-day workshop culminated in a public performance in the park at Moravian Square. There was also a "V4 Discussion", which focused on the censorship of art in the Visegrad Four countries in the context of historical development, the current geopolitical situation, and the challenges faced by people involved with culture.&nbsp;In addition to the main program, attendees could take in the festival’s Off- program, which included an opening performance in a public space, concerts, and parties, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. The opening ceremony took place outdoors in the park on Moravské náměstí. It was followed by concerts by three bands: the Godfathers, Sycek, and MMNK. On the following nights, parties were held at the venues ArtBar Druhý Pád, Spektrum, and Kabinet Múz, where visitors could listen to the work of the bands Chora Sfakion, Pipesh, Chryzotil271, DJ C1UBCUB, Whyohwhy, Dukla, Hihihahaholky. The closing ceremony and the subsequent party were held, as is traditional, on the premises of The Goose on a String Theatre, where the bands Trin and Monte Cris B2B Cuntina played the accompaniment.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This year’s jury consisted of three professionals and one theatrology student. The jury members were Claire Binyon (theatre director and ESMAE associate professor from Portugal), June Horton-White (Finnish light designer and technical producer), Gábor Koltai (Hungarian director, pedagogue and essayist), and Lada Hradilíková, a student in the master's degree programme in Theatre Studies and Polish Philology at Palacký University in Olomouc.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;During the closing ceremony, the jury awarded the Marta Awards in four categories chosen by the jury. In the category of Light Design, David Brabec (Janáček Academy of Performing Arts, Brno, Czech Republic) was awarded for the production “Bernarda Alba”. The jury appreciated his immaculate sense of dramaturgy and ingenious visual thinking. In the category of Best Stage Music, Anna Riabtseva (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine) received the award for the production “Psycha Buda” for setting the poems of the Bu-Ba-Bu Poetic Trio to music and performing them with the instrumental skills the entire collective has acquired during rehearsals, creating and uplifting and tearful cabaret of the Apocalypse around us and inside us. The Marta Award in the category of Acting was given to Julia Fidelus (The Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw, Branch Campus in Białystok, Poland) for portrayal of two complete and vibrant characters and creation of illusion in her performance “20 DEN” which causes the audience to believe that the relatable story she is telling is her own. In the category of Directing, the award was given to Yoojung Kim (Korea National University of Arts, Seoul, South Korea) for creating and directing a fully integrated performance “The Nape” incorporating all the elements of theatre in a beautiful, rhythmic and thought-provoking retelling of the ancient Greek stories making the bridge between the traditional Korean techniques of mask, dance and music and contemporary concerns.&nbsp;&nbsp;The festival would not have been possible without the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the South Moravian Region, the State Cultural Fund of the Czech Republic, the City of Brno, the City District Brno-střed, and the International Visegrad Fund, whose mission is to support steps towards sustainable regional cooperation in Central Europe.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The festival was held under the auspices of Mgr. At the beginning of April, a wave of creativity and theatre got under the skin of the city of Brno in the form of the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER.

The festival also featured moderated discussions on performances and workshops. The workshop “Greener Theatre?” (led by Anna Rouhu from Finland) focused on making theatre productions more sustainable, including discussions and group work imagining what such sustainable theatre could look like. In the workshop “Site Specific and Socially Engaged Art,” Sarah Günther (Germany) presented socially engaged street performances by the artistic group Pneuma Szöv. The “Jazz Dance Training” workshop, facilitated by Dr. David Strnad (Czech Republic), introduced participants to the basics of jazz dance. The last workshop, entitled “Mindful Movement and Flow Acrobatics,” organized in collaboration with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.visegradfund.org/">International Visegrad Fund (IVF)</a> and led by Adam Mašura (Slovakia), focused on applying mindfulness techniques in the context of the body and its movement. The “V4 Discussion” (also organized in collaboration with the IVF) addressed social issues as reflected in the artistic environment, particularly focusing on safety, similar to the previous year.<component-embed-media src="https://s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/mediaboard-publishing/blogs/BEc4KGFk5MJmkTChAuzVpVtGcipCuopn" alt="Photo Terezie Fojtová" visible_alt="true" url="" content_type="image/jpeg" type="image"></component-embed-media>In addition to the main program, attendees could take in the festival’s Off-program, which included an opening procession, concerts, parties, as well as welcoming and closing ceremonies. The Opening Parade started from the Theatre Faculty of JAMU, passed through Freedom Square, and led to the Courtyard of the Old Town Hall where the opening ceremony took place. Following that, four bands performed: Toad Planet, Ghost of You, Krajina Ró, and Mezi Patry Klid. Subsequent evenings featured parties at the venues Kavárna Trojka and ArtBar Druhý Pád, where visitors enjoyed music from bands like Midnight Swimmers, InFlus, Trible-J, NESSYE, Space Bandits, Beach Bum, the JAMU Jazz Band, and DJ Rubenze. The jury members were Maria Joăo Vicente, a dramaturge, educator, and actress from Portugal; Márton Birta, a Hungarian director, actor, and educator; Tata Tavdishvili, a Georgian lecturer, director, and performer; and student juror Viktor Hájek, a master’s degree student in theatre studies and cultural anthropology at Palacký University in Olomouc.<component-embed-media src="https://s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/mediaboard-publishing/blogs/BwaOo7LdVSQSpnJdKshNBKRMJj9HFuPj" alt="Photo Daniel Burda" visible_alt="true" url="" content_type="image/jpeg" type="image"></component-embed-media>During the closing ceremony, the jury awarded the Marta Awards. In the category of Directing, Kristina Kellerová and Jovita Siu Ji Chin were awarded for the production anytime, anywhere. The jury particularly appreciated innovative and transdisciplinary approach which brings together multimedia, visual arts, movement and poetry through practical research. In the category of Female performance, Barbora Šimová received the award for the production The Image of a Woman / The Origin of Clouds or What It Means to Believe in Something for the ability to powerfully express character´s, feelings, and emotions non-verbally. The Marta Award for Male performance was given to Matīss Kučinskis for his heartfelt portrayal of deep feelings of hopelessness, enamourment, calculation and hope in the production of Hello, Out There!. In middle of April, the Storm of Creativity and Theatre swept through Brno in the form of the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER

Like every year, the festival is organized by students from the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts. And this year, for the first time ever, Mgr. Sonja Špačková, a current student, became the festival director.You will be able to see the art of foreign and local students on the stages of well-known Brno theatres such as the Theatre Goose on a String and the JAMU school theatres – the Theatre on Orlí Street and Studio Marta.&nbsp;The festival will take place in the atmosphere of THE STORM, which is the theme of this year's festival, for a total of five days. The opening parade will start on Tuesday, 16 April in front of the Theatre Faculty of JAMU and will culminate in the Old Town Hall Courtyard on the Open-Air Stage provided by the Tourist Information Centre of Brno.A total of 9 theatre schools will visit the heart of South Moravia. Students from Slovakia from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, as well as students from Austria from The Max Reinhardt Seminar - University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and from Poland’s AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Krakow. From Switzerland we will be visited by students from Academy Dimitri in Terre di Pedemonte, from Serbia by students from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade and from Ukraine by students from the National I. K. Karpenko-Karyi University of Theatre, Cinema and Television in Kiev. Last but not least, we will be visited by students from Latvia from the Latvian Academy of Culture in Riga. Of course, we will also be visited by students from the Theatre Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. But you can also expect interactive workshops introducing a wide range of approaches to the craft of theatre. You can look forward to concerts by bands of various genres and parties with DJs. The bands you will be able to listen to are: mezi patry klid, Ghost Of You, Toad Planet, Krajina Ró, Tribe-J, InFlus, Midnight Swimmers, Space Bandits, Beach Bum, Nessie, Dj Duo, Kolorez, JAMU Jazz band a DJ Rubenz. The courtyard of the Old Town Hall, café Trojka or Artbar, where most of the evening programme will take place, will allow you to soak up the extraordinary atmosphere of evening in Brno. Even though SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER is a non-competitive festival, the jury awards the Marta Award for outstanding artistic achievements. And who is part of this year's jury? The jury includes Hungarian actor and director Márton Birta, and Maria João Vicente from Portugal, an actress and dramaturge. The last foreign juror is director and performer Tata Angola Tavdishvili, who will join us from distant Georgia. The jury will also include one student representative, Viktor Hájek, who studies Theatre Studies and Cultural Anthropology at Palacký University in Olomouc. Tickets for individual productions will be available online at GoOut website no later than one week before the festival. Let us present the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER with its extensive programme.
What can you look forward to? We already know which international schools and which jurors will participate this year.

The 34th edition of the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER will take place in April of this year. This year's theme is The Storm.&nbsp;"The Storm is coming. One, two, three... We need to shake it off and get ready for the next one. A storm is unpleasant while it lasts – but after it comes a rainbow. The air clears, and we can breathe again in peace.&nbsp;Maybe it is time to get used to the fact that sometimes it just rains. If you cover your ears, lightning will kill you anyway. Perhaps we've forgotten how to resist. Maybe we’ve forgotten that we have to fight discomfort, not hide from it. There is no calm, only storm. And that's why we want to unleash a storm – especially a creative one - at our festival."&nbsp;This year, the faculty is giving more authority and power to its students – that is why this year's festival director is Mgr. Sonja Špačková, a student of Theater Management.&nbsp;&nbsp;As always, the festival venues will be Divadlo Husa na provázku and Sklepní scéna CED, as well as the faculty’s theatres: Divadlo na Orlí and Studio Marta. The 34th edition of The International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER

In addition to theatrical performances, festival visitors had the opportunity to participate in creative workshops or a discussion on the topic "Are we safe and do we want to be?" from the perspective of the Visegrad Group countries, which addressed not only the issue of sexual violence at universities. During ENC: TALK, each of the judges presented a topic related to their professional field that resonates with today's audience. The viewers had the opportunity to gain insight into their practice.
