SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER je mezinárodní festival divadelních škol s více než třicetiletou tradicí. Jedinečnost festivalu spočívá v tom, že hlavní organizátory tvoří studenti Divadelní fakulty Janáčkovy akademie múzických umění.

SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER

The Core Organising Team for The International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER 2026 is made up of third-year students of Theatre Management and Stage Technology.&nbsp;&nbsp;Led by the Festival Director Kateřina Halamíčková and the Treasurer of the Festival Hana Severinová, members of the team lead the individual sections – Fundraising, Guest Service, Jury, Participants, Media and Promotion, OFF Programme, the Artistic Section and Technical Support. The organization of the international festival is also part of the curriculum for students in the first and second years of their studies, and their participation has a strong impact on their education.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The festival's final form is also influenced by the Artistic Section, which consists of students of the Dramaturgy and Directing, Scenography, Audiovisual Media and Theatre as well as Radio and TV Dramaturgy and Scriptwriting, with Eva Kaslová (a student of the Dramaturgy and Directing Department) serving as artistic director this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;This section, for example, helps shape the dramaturgical line of a given edition of the festival, participates in the selection of productions, the conception of the ceremonies, and the selection of themes. The spiral that accompanies this year's edition thus symbolizes movement, growth, and a constant return to the essence.&nbsp;&nbsp;The resulting collaboration across departments connects production practice with creative thinking. The festival is an opportunity to pause, discover something in the productions that resonate with us, form an opinion, think critically, engage in debate, let art affect us, have fun, dance the evenings away, and, in a spiral of exhaustion, get through the next day of the festival.&nbsp;&nbsp;SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER combines encounters across year-groups, disciplines, and generations—and mainly encounters with ourselves. Productions are people. Who is behind the 36th annual of The International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER?

Produkční jádro 36. ročníku Mezinárodního festivalu divadelních škol SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER tvoří úzký organizační tým složený ze studentstva třetího ročníku Ateliéru divadelní produkce a jevištní technologie.&nbsp;&nbsp;Úzký organizační tým v čele s ředitelkou Kateřinou Halamíčkovou a ekonomkou Hanou Severinovou se chopil vedoucích rolí jednotlivých sekcí – Fundraising, Hosté, Porota a Soubory, Média a Propagace, OFF program, ART sekce a Technical Support. Organizace mezinárodního festivalu je navíc pro studentstvo, stejně jako studijně mladší ročníky, pevnou součástí výuky, čímž je podpořen kýžený edukační přesah.&nbsp;Na výsledné podobě festivalu se podílí také ART sekce, kterou tvoří studenstvo Režie a dramaturgie, Scénografie, Audiovizuální tvorby a divadla a Rozhlasové a televizní dramaturgie a scenáristiky, v čele s uměleckou šéfkou, jejíž role se letos zhostila (studentka Režie a dramaturgie) Eva Kaslová. Právě tato sekce spoluutváří dramaturgickou linku daného ročníku festivalu, podílí se na výběru inscenací, koncepci, režii a scénografickém pojetí ceremoniálů, festivalových prostor a výběru komunikačního tématu daného festivalového ročníku. Spirála, která provází a bude provázet letošní ročník, tak předznamenává symbol pohybu, růstu a neustálý návrat k podstatě.&nbsp;Výsledná spolupráce napříč ateliéry vytváří prostor, kde se propojuje produkční praxe s tvůrčím myšlením. Festival je příležitostí zastavit se, objevit v inscenacích něco, co v nás rezonuje, utvořit si názor, kriticky myslet, vést debatu, nechat na sebe umění působit, bavit se, protančit večery a ve spirále společenské únavy absolvovat další festivalové dny.&nbsp;&nbsp;SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER v sobě snoubí setkávání napříč ročníky, obory i generacemi – a především i setkávání se sebou samými. Produkce jsou lidé. Kdo stojí za 36. ročníkem Mezinárodního festivalu divadelních škol SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER?

I took the liberty of interviewing Vojtěch Obdržálek, a recent graduate in acting who became a long-term participant in the festival during his time at the Theatre Faculty of JAMU. After graduation, Vojta has become a member of the acting ensemble at the Městské divadlo Zlín. Even though he is currently in the middle of dress rehearsals, he found a moment to share his memories and experiences from the festival with us so that we could reminisce about the festival atmosphere with him for a while.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When you hear SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER, what comes to your mind first?&nbsp;<blockquote>Lots of young people who are interested in theatre. Lots of fun, getting to know each other, learning about other cultures, or rather, how theatre is done in other countries and what their approach to it is.&nbsp;</blockquote>How many times have you participated in the festival? Were you always just a spectator, or did you also shine on stage?&nbsp;<blockquote>I was at ENCOUNTER all four years I was at JAMU, so from 2021 to 2025, and always just as a spectator. I never managed to get on stage as a participant.</blockquote>Do you remember your first ENCOUNTER? Did it meet your expectations? What surprised you?<blockquote>I don't remember it in detail (laughs). Since I was there four times, it all kind of blends together. I didn't really know how prestigious it is. That surprised me a lot. Like, really, people are willing to come to ENCOUNTER from as far away as Africa, Asia, America... Really, people from all over the world come to JAMU in Brno for The International Festival of Theatre Schools.</blockquote>Is there a performance from the festival that you still remember today?&nbsp;<blockquote>I recently recalled a monodrama, and I think it was last year. Some girl, and now I don't know, man, whether from Germany or Sweden... she had huge curly hair, and it was absolutely luxurious in terms of movement. (author's note: Accademia Dimitri Verscio, Shooting Snow White, 2025, Switzerland) Or another thing that was quite interesting, I liked when the Koreans did King Oedipus – a Greek tragedy in Korean dress. They were kids in Korean clothes with masks, and they performed a Greek tragedy through movement. That was interesting. (author's note: Korean National University of the Arts: The Nape, 2025, South Korea)&nbsp;</blockquote>And what is it like to watch a performance in a language you don't understand?<blockquote>Well, fortunately, most of them had subtitles, so you could more or less keep up with it. On the other hand, when it's well-acted, you literally don't need to know what they're saying. You just read their looks and how the actors react to each other, and you can figure out what it's about relatively easily. Or, for example, when you go to see Slovaks or Poles, it's pretty much the same. You're able to get it even without subtitles, within reason.&nbsp;</blockquote>Do you have a story from ENCOUNTER that you're not afraid to share with us?&nbsp;<blockquote>(laughs) Well, I have a lot of stories from ENCOUNTER, of course, but most of them are completely unpublishable, so I can't tell them (laughs). But it often happened to me that when I went to a party in the evening as part of the program, as you meet people there, you stop and start talking to someone. Since it's ENCOUNTER, you both assume you don't speak the same language, so you start speaking English, and only after about three minutes of conversation does it become clear that you're actually both Czechs, and that you can talk to each other in Czech. (laughs)&nbsp;</blockquote>Do you plan to maintain your loyalty to ENCOUNTER and visit it again this year, even though you are no longer a JAMU student?&nbsp;<blockquote>Wow... I haven't really thought about that at all. Since I'm already a working person and my schedule isn't completely set, it will depend a lot on whether I even have time, whether I'll even be able to get tickets, which will be much more difficult now that I'm not at JAMU as a student. It would be nice and I would like to go, but for these reasons, it probably won't work out.&nbsp;</blockquote>What advice would you give to someone who is going to their first ENCOUNTER this year?&nbsp;<blockquote>I have a few things... Buy an off-pass, that's a must-have! Then I would also say go to parties and leave early enough so that you can manage to catch at least two, preferably three performances the next day, because such a range of genres, approaches to theatre... it doesn't happen often. It's nice to take advantage of the fact that you have such an opportunity, so ideally catch two, preferably three shows a day.&nbsp;</blockquote>Is there anything you would like to share through the article?&nbsp;<blockquote>Well, not really (laughs). Love each other. As my colleague from the theatre, Gustav Řezníček, would say: "We are theatre. We love each other."&nbsp;</blockquote>&nbsp;&nbsp;I would like to thank Vojta very much for such a pleasant conversation. Já, Ema Drmolová, jsem si dovolila vyzpovídat čerstvého absolventa činoherního herectví Vojtěcha Obdržálka, který se během svého působení na Divadelní fakultě JAMU stal pravidelným účastníkem festivalu. Vojta se po studiu stal členem hereckého souboru v Městském divadle Zlín, a i přesto, že je momentálně ve víru generálních zkoušek, si našel chvíli, aby se s námi podělil o své vzpomínky a zážitky z festivalu, a my se tak společně s ním můžeme na chvíli vrátit do festivalové atmosféry.&nbsp;&nbsp;Když se řekne SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER, co tě napadne jako první?&nbsp;<blockquote>Spousta mladých lidí, kteří se zajímají o divadlo. Spousta zábavy, seznamování se, poznávání jiných kultur nebo spíš toho, jak se dělá divadlo v jiných státech a jaký tam k němu mají přístup.&nbsp;</blockquote>Kolikrát ses festivalu zúčastnil? Byl jsi pokaždé jen divákem nebo jsi zazářil i na jevišti?&nbsp;&nbsp;<blockquote>Na ENCOUNTERU jsem byl všechny čtyři roky, co jsem byl na JAMU, takže od roku 2021 do roku 2025, a pokaždé jenom jako divák. Nikdy se mi nepoštěstilo dostat se tam jako účastník.&nbsp;</blockquote>Pamatuješ si na svůj první ENCOUNTER? Naplnila se tvá očekávání? Co tě překvapilo?&nbsp;<blockquote>Nepamatuju si ho úplně do detailu. (smích) Jak jsem na něm byl čtyřikrát, tak se mi to různě slívá. Já jsem vlastně nevěděl, jak moc je to prestižní. To mě na tom překvapilo. Jakože, fakt, na ENCOUNTER jsou lidi ochotní přijet, ty vado, až někde z Afriky, z Asie, z Ameriky... Reálně z celého světa přijedou na JAMU do Brna kvůli Mezinárodnímu festivalu divadelních škol.&nbsp;</blockquote>Existuje nějaké představení z festivalu, na které vzpomínáš dodnes?&nbsp;<blockquote>Teď nedávno jsem si vzpomněl na monodrama a myslím, že to byl minulý ročník. Nějaká holka, a teď nevím, čoveče, jestli z Německa nebo Švédska... měla velikánské kudrnaté vlasy, a to bylo teda pohybově naprosto luxusní. (pozn. autora: Accademia Dimitri Verscio: Shooting Snow White, 2025, Švýcarsko). Anebo ještě co bylo dost zajímavé, tak se mi líbilo, když Korejci dělali Krále Oidipa – řeckou tragédii v korejském kabátku. Byly to děcka v korejském oblečení s maskami a pohybově zahráli řeckou tragédii. To bylo zajímavé. (pozn. autora: Korea national university of art: The Nape, 2025, Jižní Korea).&nbsp;</blockquote>A jaké to je sledovat představení, ve kterém herci mluví jazykem, kterému nerozumíš?&nbsp;<blockquote>Tak naštěstí u většiny z nich byly titulky, takže se to dalo plus mínus stíhat. Na druhou stranu, ve chvíli, kdy je to dobře zahrané, tak nepotřebuješ doslova vědět, co říkají. Stačí ti ty pohledy a to, jak ti herci spolu reagují a vlastně ti poměrně jednoduše dojde, o čem to je. Anebo třeba když se jdeš dívat na Slováky nebo Poláky, tak tam je to celkem jedno. Tam jsi schopná to pobrat i bez titulků v rámci možností.&nbsp;&nbsp;</blockquote>Máš nějakou historku z ENCOUNTERU, se kterou se o ní nebojíš podělit?&nbsp;<blockquote>(smích) Tak historek z ENCOUNTERU mám samozřejmě spoustu, ale naprostá většina z nich je naprosto nepublikovatelných, takže to říct nemůžu. (smích) Ale nezřídka se mi třeba stávalo, že když jsem šel večer na nějakou párty v rámci programu, tak jak se tam potkáváš s těma lidma, tak se s někým zastavíš a začnete se spolu bavit. Vzhledem k tomu, že je ENCOUNTER, tak oba předpokládáte, že nemluvíte stejným jazykem, a tak začnete spolu mluvit anglicky a až třeba po třech minutách rozhovoru vyjde najevo, že jste vlastně oba dva Češi, a že si můžete vykládat česky. (smích)&nbsp;</blockquote>Máš v plánu svou věrnost k ENCOUNTERU dodržet a navštívit ho i letos, ačkoliv už nejsi studentem JAMU?&nbsp;<blockquote>Fůha... nějak jsem to vůbec nepromýšlel. Vzhledem k tomu, že jsem už pracující člověk a můj rozvrh není úplně daný, bude záležet dost na tom, jestli vůbec budu mít čas, jestli budu mít vůbec možnost dostat se k lístkům, což už tím, že nejsem na JAMU, tak bude mnohem složitější než jako student. Bylo by to hezké a já bych se tam rád podíval, ale kvůli těmto spíš provozním záležitostem, tak to nejspíš neklapne.&nbsp;</blockquote>Co bys poradil člověku, který se letos poprvé chystá na svůj první ENCOUNTER?&nbsp;<blockquote>Pár věcí bych měl... Koupit si off-pásku, to je must-have! Pak bych taky řekl chodit na párty a odcházet natolik zavčas, aby člověk ten další den byl schopný stihnout alespoň dvě, nejlíp tři představení, protože taková paleta žánrů, přístupů k divadlu... fakt se to nestává často. Je fajn toho využít, že takovou možnost máš, takže ideálně dvě, nejlíp tři špíly stihnout za den.&nbsp;</blockquote>Máš něco, co bys ty sám rád skrze článek sdělil?&nbsp;<blockquote>Hele asi ani ne. (smích) Mějte se rádi. Jak by řekl můj kolega z divadla Gustav Řezníček: „My jsme divadlo. My se máme rádi.”&nbsp;</blockquote>Tímto chci Vojtovi moc poděkovat za tak příjemný rozhovor. „Reálně z celého světa přijedou na JAMU do Brna kvůli Mezinárodnímu festivalu divadelních škol SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER”

For over thirty years, the festival has been connecting young artists from around the world, offering them a space for sharing, communication and mutual inspiration. It is also unique in that its organisation traditionally remains entirely in the hands of students from the JAMU Theatre Faculty, giving the festival authenticity and the courage to experiment. Through 2025, the festival has hosted ensembles from more than 40 countries and 4 continents and, thanks to its international reach and emphasis on quality, it is one of the most significant events of its kind in Europe.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each year of the festival has its own original theme, which forms the visual identity of the entire festival, and its selection is entirely up to students. The theme unites us and inspires us to create and think about the contemporary world, which is why this year’s theme chosen is Spiral – as a symbol of movement, growth and the constant return to the essence.&nbsp;"Spiral as both a surface and a space. A surface for stagnation, and a space for constant transformation. It can be a rise to new understanding, or a fall into the rabbit hole. A spiral, or a spinning circle? Are we trapped inside, or is it leading us forward? It depends on the point of view. From which side do you look at me? Do I still have the same shape? Do you see me as a fixed point, or do I keep shifting before your eyes? Look closely. Once you see me, we’ll spin together. Round and round. Round and round. Into infinity. Can you find where I end? To encounter the threshold between horizontal and vertical. Between beginning and end. To burrow deep. All the way to the core. Each step along the spiral moves us forward – and yet, we return to where we began. But are we still the ones who once stepped in?"A festival of this calibre is the result of collaboration between the team of Theatre Production students. They form the Core Organising Team headed by The Festival Director Kateřina Halamíčková. The Core Organizing Team is responsible for all key areas of the festival – from communication with guests, judges and ensembles, through technical support and production, to promotion, media coverage and the accompanying programme. Thanks to joint decision-making and shared responsibility, the festival functions as a collective project, created through the work and dedication of the entire team.&nbsp;An integral part of the festival are our ambassadors – prominent theatre personalities associated with the Theatre Faculty of JAMU. This year’s faces of the festival are Kamila Polívková and Tomáš Weber.&nbsp;Kamila Polívková Kamila Polívková is a Czech theater director, set designer, and costume designer also working abroad. She lives by the motto “less is more” and is interested in the inner worlds of characters who do not fit into the conventional norms. She is very happy to take on the role of festival ambassador because she loves theater, encounters, and Brno. Let´s meet and enjoy!&nbsp;Tomáš Weber is Czech film and theatre actor. “Hey! My name is Tom and I’m a theatre and film actor. I’ve acted in Waves, Zlatovláska, High School Heist and for this year’s edition of the festival SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER I’m going to be the ambassador. Meeting new people, new artists, different styles from different countries is so super important for your artistic development, as it was for mine. The evening programme was provided by three bands of different genres – Na Kolejích Kočka, The Queues and Caramel, whose music kept us on the dance floor. It was an extraordinary musical experience that we will not soon forget. The International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER 2026 returns to Brno

Tento festival již přes třicet let propojuje mladé tvůrce z celého světa a nabízí jim prostor pro sdílení, komunikaci i vzájemnou inspiraci. Výjimečný je i tím, že organizace tradičně zůstává plně v rukou studentů Divadelní fakulty JAMU, čímž festival získává autenticitu i odvahu experimentovat. Festival do roku 2025 hostil soubory z více než 40 zemí a 4 kontinentů<s>,</s> a díky mezinárodnímu přesahu a důrazu na kvalitu patří mezi výraznou událost<s>í</s> svého druhu v Evropě. &nbsp;Každý ročník festivalu má své originální téma, které tvoří vizuální identitu celému festivalu, jehož výběr záleží čistě na studentech. Téma nás spojuje, je naší inspirací k tvorbě a přemýšlení o současném světě, a proto bylo pro letošní rok vybráno téma: Spirála – jako symbol pohybu, růstu a neustálého návratu k podstatě všeho.&nbsp;"Spirála je plocha i prostor. Plocha pro stagnaci a prostor pro neustálou proměnu. Může být vzestupem k novému poznání i pádem do králičí nory. Spirála, nebo točící se kruh? Jsme v ní uvězněni, nebo nás vede dál? Záleží na úhlu pohledu.&nbsp; Z jaké strany se na mě podíváš? A budu mít stále stejný tvar? Vnímáš mě jako pevný bod, nebo se ti neustále proměňuji před očima? Podívej se pořádně. Až mě uvidíš, budeme se spolu točit dokolečka. Dokolečka dokola. Do nekonečna. Dokážeš najít můj konec?&nbsp; Setkat se na hranici mezi horizontálou a vertikálou. Mezi začátkem a koncem. Zavrtat se hluboko. Až do samého středu. Každý krok po spirále nás posouvá vpřed – a přesto se vracíme tam, odkud jsme přišli. Ale jsme ještě těmi, kdo kdysi vykročili?"Festival takového formátu je výsledkem spolupráce organizačního týmu studentů Divadelní produkce. Ti tvoří úzký organizační tým (ÚOT), v jehož čele stojí ředitelka festivalu Kateřina Halamíčková. ÚOT zajišťuje všechny klíčové oblasti festivalu – od komunikace s hosty, porotci a soubory, přes technické zajištění a produkci, až po propagaci, mediální výstupy a doprovodný program. Díky společnému rozhodování a sdílené odpovědnosti funguje festival jako kolektivní projekt, který vzniká díky práci a nasazení celého týmu. .&nbsp;Nedílnou součástí festivalu jsou i naši ambasadoři – výrazné osobnosti divadla spjaté s Divadelní fakultou JAMU. Letošními tvářemi festivalu se stali Kamila Polívková a Tomáš Weber.&nbsp;Kamila Polívková je česká divadelní režisérka, scénografka a kostýmní výtvarnice, která působí i v zahraničí. Řídí se heslem „méně je více“ a zajímají ji vnitřní světy postav nezapadajících do běžných společenských norem. Roli ambasadorky festivalu přijala s radostí, protože miluje divadlo, setkávání a Brno. “Těším se!”&nbsp;Tomáš Weber je český filmový a divadelní herec. "Ahoj! Jmenuju se Tom a jsem český filmový a divadelní herec. Jako student Divadelní fakulty Janáčkovy akademie múzických umění jsem festival Setkání/Encounter miloval a o to větší mám radost, že se teď naše cesty znovu propojují.&nbsp;Setkávání s novými lidmi, umělci a styly z různých zemí, to všechno je důležité pro osobní i tvůrčí rozvoj – stejně jako bylo pro mě. Budu se proto na vás těšit od 14. do 18. dubna 2026 v Brně na festivalu SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER. Na setkání, které má smysl."Ačkoliv se hlavní program festivalu chystá až na duben příštího roku, už 8. prosince proběhla v Kabinetu MÚZ první doprovodná akce 36. ročníku — Vánoční večírek ENC: ICY WHIRL. O večerníprogram se postaraly 3 žánrově odlišné kapely – Na Kolejích Kočka, The Queues a Caramel, které nám díky své hudbě nedovolily odejít z parketu. Byl to mimořádný hudební zážitek, na který jen tak nezapomeneme. Mezinárodní festival divadelních škol SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER se vrátí do Brna

Before the space officially opened to visitors, an internal meeting of the organizing team took place, bringing together students of theatre production and stage technology. The meeting was opened with welcoming remarks by Festival Director Kateřina Halamíčková and the Dean of the Theatre Faculty of JAMU, Professor Blanka Kolegar.&nbsp;The public programme began at 7:30 p.m. with a brief opening led by Festival Director Kateřina Halamíčková alongside Festival Economist Hana Severinová. In their speeches, they introduced the upcoming edition of the festival and invited guests to the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER 2026, which will take place from April 14 to 18, 2026.&nbsp;The musical programme of the evening was opened by the band Na kolejích kočka, whose energetic and playful performance immediately drew the audience into the festive atmosphere. Their catchy melodies, familiar to many in the crowd, set the tone for the evening from the very first minutes.&nbsp;They were followed by The Queues, who seamlessly picked up the momentum and further intensified the energy of the night. Enthusiastic reactions from the audience quickly spread to the dance floor, which soon filled with lively dance moves.&nbsp;The final musical act of the evening was Caramel, whose performance carried a distinctly personal touch. The band’s lead singer is a student at JAMU, a fact that was reflected in the close and natural connection with the audience, many of whom were already well acquainted with his work.&nbsp;The ENC Christmas Party thus offered not only a first taste of the festival atmosphere, but also a welcoming space for students, organizers, and the public to meet in a relaxed and friendly spirit.&nbsp;A big thank-you goes to all members of the OFF Programme team, whose work ensured the smooth preparation and execution of the evening. We are already looking forward to future meetings, parties, and activities that the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER 2026 will bring this April.
