Ambassador
For this year's edition of the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER, Jaromír Nosek has been appointed ambassador. This Czech actor, who has acted in many theatres not only in the Czech Republic but also in Slovakia, is known mainly for his roles in the film Rebels or in the series Vyprávěj. He is a graduate of JAMU and has worked in Brno at the National Theatre Brno, Theatre Goose on a String, and Polárka Theatre. He is currently performing in various theatres in Prague. As ambassador he appears in the festival TV spot, and we can look forward to seeing him at the Opening and the Closing ceremonies. But before he comes to Brno, you can read this interview with him.
If I read correctly, you worked for some time in Brno theatres. How do you remember these years?
Yes, when I was at school, I was already a guest at the Mahen Theatre on the big and small stage, I also acted in theatre performances. Then I was in the 7 and a half Theatre, then I had an engagement in the Polárka Theatre and then I was in the Theatre Goose on a String for three years. A beautiful time.
In your opinion, what are the differences between Brno and Prague?
I would say that in Brno there is more emphasis on original work. Another thing I remember is that musicals in Brno were not so full of big names, but they were much more professional than in Prague... But the truth is that I haven't seen anything in Brno theatres for years.
I know that a lot of people ask you about your role in Účastníci zájezdu, and personally, I best remember your prominent role in the series Vyprávěj. I wonder what TV, film, or theatre role you like the most?
You are right. I guess you could say that I like Vyprávěj a lot. In the plethora of current shows, this one was filmed honestly, not with a hot needle, and it's quite educational to boot. Of the films, most of the work has been on Daria and the Theatre, certainly The Great Gatsby in Příbram, A Clockwork Orange in Pilsen and East of Eden in Prague...
You studied both musical and dramatic acting at JAMU, is that right? Do you see any benefits in trying both fields?
It's a bit more complicated... I didn't get into drama, but I did get into musical theatre, which I didn't even apply for. Because of the lack of acting in that field, I worked with drama classes. I mean, I honestly staged musical theatre shows in my own field, and in addition, in my own time, I rehearsed nine dramas with drama students in four years. In the end I received a degree in both musical and drama acting. And I did two graduate shows - for drama and for musical acting. In my subsequent work, I used the experience of both many times.
As a student, I'm quite curious, what were your student years in Brno like? Could you highlight any moments that stand out from your studies?
I am glad that I studied in Brno and not in Prague. It was quieter in Brno and with my latent ability to curl up... God knows how it would have turned out for me in Prague. :-)
And what about the bars/houses? - Any favourite places where you liked to spend time?
Livingstone, Desert, Charlie's, theatre bars and of course Blue Nonstop, nowadays Kahla I guess. :-)
Of course, another thing I'm interested in is what memories you have of the SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER festival? I'm sure it had a completely different look than today.
I don't know what it looks like today, but back then... lots of strangers, mixed projects, lots of people everywhere and lots of good energy, street theatre, carefree times, and alcohol.
The article will also be published in English for our foreign guests and troupes, how would you introduce yourself to them? What do you think describes you as an actor?
Give it all you’ve got.
