36. ročník Mezinárodního festivalu divadelních škol SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER, který se letos točil kolem tématu duše a spirály, dokázal v sobotu večer něco, co možná málokdo očekával. Smazal hranici mezi hledištěm a jevištěm natolik, že v sálu nezůstal jediný pouhý pozorovatel.
At the international theatre festival Encounter, visitors had the opportunity to see work by students from our department of audiovisual arts. The first film screened in the series was Irenka, an almost five-minute-long photo film about the filmmaker’s great-grandmother. Through a series of brief episodes, it recounts the story of her father, who fought in the First World War, her own life during the Protectorate and the years that followed, as well as her reflections on and anxieties about the world to come. The photographs capture a small, meticulously kept flat, with its carefully organised bookcase, antique glassware, and crossword puzzles – her great passion. Their conversations are mediated through a tablet, which serves as a bridge between the filmmaker and her great-grandmother, whose hearing has significantly deteriorated.

How do we rescue photography from social media feeds and force it to truly interact with its audience? Three students from the Audiovisual Arts and Theatre program at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU) offer a compelling answer. They have envisioned their collaborative exhibition at Café Trojka as a dynamic interplay of space and emotion.

It’s just a date, isn’t it?
Many of us associate puppets with childhood and fairy tales, in which puppeteers bring life to simple objects. One such person is Luděk Vémola, a founding member of the Lišeň Theatre. A short documentary about him was screened on Saturday afternoon as part of the OFF program.
As part of Saturday’s screening program, festival visitors had the opportunity to watch the music video for the single Mistakes by the indie-rock band Midnight Swimmers. This video is not merely an illustration of the song, but also engages with it in a dialogue, using its own artistic language without forcing only one possible interpretation onto the audience.
